Bucharest City Hall withdraws „Oxygen” tax

Bucharest City Mayor, Gabriela Firea, said that she wants to give up on the „Oxygen” tax, following the requests of Bucharest residents who were not satisfied with this measure.

The Mayor said she was giving up on the „Oxigen” vignette, after a “huge wave of rejection” she acknowledged after a public consultation she did on Facebook. Gabriela Firea had started a survey among Bucharest residents to see what their reactions were, given the wave of discontent expressed by the public after the announcement of this measure.

The survey, conducted on Facebook, revealed that most respondents will waive the fee. The survey had 60,000 respondents and 2 million views.

The „Oxygen” project proposed that all cars with pollution norms under Euro 5 to pay an electronic vignette to enter downtown Bucharest, but, following some amendments, Euro 4 cars were exempted from paying the vignette until 2021.
